Feel-Good Fiction - What does it mean?

John Morey defines Feel-Good Fiction as a genre that, despite elements of threat, danger, or misfortune, ensures satisfactory and positive resolution for the reader.

His own novels, which he uses as examples, avoid explicit sex, violence, and bad language, setting them apart from some other romantic fiction.

He emphasizes that the genre can still be serious and meaningful, with the goal of creating characters and situations that resonate deeply with the reader.

The setting is also highlighted as a key element that can contribute to a novel's "feel-good" quality, offering a sense of escape.

Feel-Good Score Characteristics

To create a "Feel-Good Score" for our romantic novel reviews, we assess the novel on the following characteristics.
We apply a score (1-10) to each and then calculate an overall average or total for a final "Feel-Good Score."

Resolution & Outcome: Does the story conclude with a satisfactory, positive, and uplifting resolution?

Harmful Content: Does the novel avoid explicit sex, gratuitous violence, and profane language? (NB: A score of "10" suggests little or no harmful content.)

Emotional Resonance: Do the characters and their situations feel relatable and emotionally engaging, prompting a sense of well-being?

Setting & Escape: Is the setting vivid and appealing, successfully offering the reader a sense of escape?

Jill Mansell's An Almost Perfect Summer is the quintessential feel-good read, delivering on every promise of its title.

Set in a picturesque Cotswolds village, the novel immediately transports the reader to an idyllic setting, making it the perfect escape from everyday life.

The story follows Nella, whose life takes an unexpected turn, leading her back to her childhood village and into a job at a luxury holiday retreat run by the handsome Nick.

The plot, rich with multiple interconnected storylines and a diverse cast of well-drawn characters, unfolds with warmth, humour, and heart. You will find yourself rooting for not just the main couple, but for every character as they navigate life's challenges.

An almost perfect summer - bestselling romance

As expected from Jill Mansell, the book is a comfortingly clean read, completely free of explicit content, ensuring it's a joy you can share with anyone.
